Politico has a big story that’s getting overlooked about how then-Pres. Donald Trump deprived Washington State of federal disaster money for almost five months after deadly wildfires in September 2020.
The reason, apparently, was bad blood between Trump and Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) over everything from climate change to COVID.
But in three paragraphs buried almost at the bottom, Politico also reveals that Trump sat on a disaster-relief request from Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) after Georgia was hit by Tropical Storm Zeta.
Politico reports that Kemp requested federal disaster aid from Trump on Nov. 18, 2020.
At the time, Trump was pressuring Georgia to certify him as the winner of the Georgia presidential vote, even though the state had voted for Joe Biden.
Three days after Kemp filed his disaster request, he certified Biden’s victory, handing him 16 Electoral College votes. Enraged, Trump reportedly referred to Kemp as a “moron” and a “nut job.”
And Trump didn’t approve Kemp’s disaster request until 55 days later, after Congress voted to certify Biden as the next president. And with little more than a week left in Trump’s presidency.
Fast forward to today, and it’s now Trump alleging that the Biden administration, falsely, deprived political enemies of disaster aid.
Once again, Georgia is a battleground. But likely only a tiny handful of Georgia voters know that Trump sat on Georgia relief aid while pressuring the state to turn over its electors to him.
Did Trump try to use the Zeta funding as leverage to make Kemp sign over Georgia’s votes in November 2020? Here’s what we do know.
