Luigi Mangione's Valedictory Speech
Suspect in CEO's killing was high-school valedictorian
Police have identified 26-year-old Luigi Mangione as the primary suspect in last week’s murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
At the time of his capture today in Altoona, PA, Mangione had several items tying him extremely closely to the killing. Reportedly, these include a ghost gun and suppressor resembling those seen in the video of Thompson’s murder.
Allegedly, Mangione had a manifesto on him, as well. It is said to display “some ill will toward corporate America.” It’s worth noting that Mangione has only been in corporate America for about four years, according to his LinkedIn page which says he got his first full-time job in November 2020, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in May of that year.
And, reportedly, he has posted a number of anti-establishment, anti-corporate, anti-climate-change sentiments online. The New York Post cites unidentified sources who said Mangione had reason to hate the U.S. health-care system, reasons related to the experiences of an ailing relative.
We’ll no doubt learn more in the days to come about what allegedly led Mangione to take the course of action he allegedly took. But the response to the killing has already shown that millions of Americans share his motives.
Spoiler: Mangione’s 2016 speech at his high school, the Gilman School in Baltimore, is pretty boring and un-noteworthy, even for a high-school valedictorian. The most notable thing about it is how much you would not foresee this guy becoming that guy.
A much better update than the one I got from "regular" news.
