When I read about all the handwringing regarding the LEFT wins in NYC I recalled that this is exactly what the ‘right’ has been doing for YEARS. What do I mean? It is my belief that every time I saw Republicans lose an election for years (before trump) that they would reverse course and move to the center but they DID NOT, they moved further ‘right’. So, given that observation (and evidence), let’s embrace moving LEFT. Think about it. A new center.
Our job as old people is to support not control and get out of the way while still contributing. If we were so smart Democrats would be in charge. Have a little grace, boomers.
Family feud?! But of course, how could I forget about the original master of ceremonys character, Richard Dawson. Mr, I had too many drinks and I flirt alot. Just makes me want to watch reruns of Hogans Heroes ! Peace
So the proposed tradeoff for blue states is, You don't get to use mail in voting vs. We will eliminate 14% of your voters through faulty software vetting. Red states get, We will eliminate 14% of your voters through faulty software vetting AND you get to use mail-in voting. These are just diabolical sonsabitches.
If you really think about it, the far right turn of the GOP almost demands a far left counterpart in the DNC. The more extreme one party becomes, the more extreme the other party needs to become to create balancing action. I'd argue this is a reason to have more than 2 dominant political parties, but what do I know? Can 2 parties ever really meet the ever changing needs of 330M people without constantly reinventing themselves?
Re: the USPS new rule...."The good news: This bullshit is already being challenged in the courts."
The GREAT news: A judge in MA already blocked this!
At Democracy Docket, headline "Judge blocks Trump order that would have let USPS refuse to deliver mail ballots"
First couple of para:
A federal judge in Massachusetts Thursday blocked federal agencies from implementing President Donald Trump’s sweeping attack on mail voting and his attempt to create a national voter registration list before the midterm elections.
The judge found that major parts of Trump’s order were “legally void” for exceeding the president’s power and encroaching on states’ authority to administer elections.
I've been following this for a couple of days now and had already commented on the rule via the USPS website. I was glad to see this in TFN also this morning.
So glad you are taking Fridays off from TFN while your foot recovers, wishing you continued healing and recovery. I'm ignoring what Carville says again, just because I do not agree with him at all. I'm glad to see new NY state folks elected to the House of Reps in Congress, and here is to more such candidates in the spirit of AOC. I'm so tired of establishment Ds fighting more with Democratic Socialist candidates, than they seem to oppose the Rs and MAGA's actions against democracy.
Washington state, where I live, ONLY has voting by mail. We also have a large swath of red east of the Cascades and along our southern border. Republicans are a minority in the State Legislature, but a sizable one.
If WA had to spin up in-person voting, I'd bet that the rural republican bites would have more trouble getting to the polls than those in densely-populated King County (which includes Seattle). I cannot imagine that state Republicans are on board with this nonsense.
I'm not sure how this threat to mail-in ballots is actually going to work. People are freaking out, but can this threat really even be carried out? Ballots are mailed out to WA voters from WA, delivered by WA post offices. Are we really supposed to believe that ballots will just pile up in a back room somewhere and not get sorted or delivered? It's easy to just blab a threat (especially with this administration) but I don't see how they can make it work in practice.
Agreed. Washington state has more than 5 million registered voters. That's a lot of mail that would need to be sequestered by either the mail prep company or the post office. I don't see either of these scenarios playing out.
Is Congress in session? Under Article I, a president (such as he is) must sign or veto a bill within 10 non-Sunday days, or it automatically becomes law. July 6 is the day.
And [Letitia James] said some of the candidates [Mamdani] backed on Tuesday “do not understand the politics of New York City, the cultural differences from district to district, who have not been part of the history and the struggle of some of these districts, and are relatively new to the body politic.”
I don’t live in NY City, but where I’m from the people who get the most votes, are generally the ones who understand the politics and struggles of their constituents *better* than those who get *fewer* than the most votes. (Or at the very least are better able to convince their constituents that they do. Just sayin’.)
Also, I’m pretty oldmaxx, but I think votesmax is spelled with Dos Equis. (Stay thirsty, my friends.)

Quality and cleverness improve with regular rest. We can wait. Hope foot gets better soon!
A note to the commentariat - let’s make an effort to comment on the Friday Facepalm the Nation so we keep the engagement up ⬆️.

I was utterly delighted to see the use of these adjectives in the snippet about Howard, Lutnick and Chinese drones:
“clinking, clanking collection of collagenous junk!”.
If you know, you know…
"Danger Will Robinson"
That's what I thought! I even found it on a Lost in Space site, but it appears to be from Wizard of Oz...
Dr. Smith was not above thievery.

That was fast! Thank you, Karen!

I got the refence, Dr. Smith! Very nice.
Yay! I actually looked it up to be sure…
Can't believe I'm on my third decade of wishing Carville would just go the fuck away.
I haven't forgotten welfare "reform" or Don't Ask Don't Tell, Jimmy!
