'...Kathy Wylde said Mamdani “terrifies taxpayers and employers.”'
Also implying that employers AREN'T taxpayers. Made more obvious by the link that if billionaires are ~job~creators~ then they are the ultimate employers, and obvz they're set to pay fuckall for the unique privilege of not being shat upon by Donnie T-rex.
The Democrat leadership not supporting Zorhan's win shows they learn nothing. They live that donor money, winning is secondary. We need to vote these dickheads out if we want to move forward. Zorhan winning despite being outspent 10 to 1 is telling. Night of election a reporter at Cuomo’s HQ was asked how the workers were handling it, her reply the workers wrote checks. Good to see big money lose, gives me hope, not so much Democrat consultants.
That Catsimatidis sounds nasty, how contagious is it - restricted to NY or can you catch it anywhere? Or is it like shingles and you're immune if you've never personally possessed a million bucks or more before?
The Dems... such punters. They had all the money in the world and couldn't defeat orange foolius this time around. I laugh at all the corporate scribblers warning us that what wins in NYC won't win anywhere else.
Congratulations Mamdani! I'm still hopeful that before I die I'll see FDR Democrats reclaim the party.
As for NYC… my understanding is that some of what Mayor Mamdani wants to implement will require approval from the Governor. I don't see Wall St Hochul going along with that. I do hope she's primaried from the left. Go true-blue, New York!
With a few exceptions, Democrats are just as fucked up as the republicans. We need a thorough housecleaning. Americans need to endorse people like Mamdani and get the word out ourselves, cause we sure can't rely on people who are only worried about their powerful positions who take millions from wealthy donors. Mamdani is proof it can be done. Look at all the money Bloomberg blew on Cuomo. Let's get all of them to throw their money away.
Massachusetts voters approved a ballot measure that imposes a 4% tax on incomes over $1 million (the amount is tied to inflation, is adjusted annually and is currently $1.08m). With the proceeds, the state created a fund to help pay for schools and infrastructure. The moneyed class made a big stink and some performatively moved to Florida (where else?) but enough of the roughly 22,000 of them stayed and have added a little over $2b to the state’s coffers annually. And that’s even better than the state expected. Rich people gonna whine and complain and threaten to leave if XXX thing happens. And hopefully someday they’ll run out of places to run and still enjoy the life they’re used to living.
New paid subscriber, Jonathan, and VERY happy to have found you!
No, I never thought back when I decided that I would never, in my life, vote for ANY Republican again, that the Dems would simply abandon their base, and become more and more like Republicans every day. I would LOVE to know why Chuck Schumer seems unable to pull off the same procedural crap that Mitch McConnell did when Repubs were in the minority, holding up the Senate, creating roadblocks every time anything of more importance than naming a post office turned up. But, no, I guess Dems think they're "better" than those Congressional reindeer games, so judges sail through, unqualified assholes who shouldn't even have been reporting on Fox News glide right through, and the Big Beautiful Bullshit Bill, I'm sure, will eventually get through the Senate so Trump doesn't write mean tweets.
I was pretty excited about Mamdani winning the primary, especially over the odious Cuomo, and I don't even live in New York! The election there is at least a CHANGE from the usual bullshit. I can't say that voters are finally "waking up," because I won't believe that until we've been through a few elections and results like this hold. I DO know that if the midterms were being held tomorrow, I wouldn't have ANY idea who to vote for. Repubs are out on principle, and Dems are pissing me off with the usual bed-wetting, namby-pamby solutions to problems being long speeches on C-SPAN no one hears, and strongly worded letters to the DOJ. Fuck them too. What a shitshow! Dems need to wake up and think up some solutions to win elections again with something a LOT more than, "we're not Trump." Better yet, we need a NEW party, if there have to be parties at all, of progressive minded candidates who will turn out voters, and keep their promises because they have INTEGRITY, not because they're only worried about their next election.
Jon: Thanks for every danged thing you are doing. I'm figuring out a way to get a few more $$ to you despite being mired in a new physical ailment and buried somewhere in the bowels of the System.
Re rent control: In the 1970s someone I knew paid $175 a month for an NYC Upper West Side one bedroom apartment. He was/is a PhD economist. When his apartment converted to condos he waltzed into a closing, bought his flat for the proverbial song, then, in the next moment, sold it for a gigantic profit. We no longer speak.
"That’s right, the deal only went through last week because Nippon Steel agreed to let the U.S. government become part owner of the company. Socialist part!"
Well, no, that's not the "socialist part". That's the "what most people have been brainwashed into thinking is socialist" part. If it were really socialist, it would be the workers owning US Steel, not a Japanese company, and the government wouldn't have anything to do with it.
No, luv, what Donald Trump just did is what most people have been trained to think of as "communism". It's not, any more than what they've been told is "socialism". Under socialism, the workers own the means of production, running it themselves and sharing the profits among themselves instead of seeing the bulk of it go to someone else while they contribute to support their community. The company is run democratically by those workers, and "management" is simply another kind of worker not a boss.
Also in the Upper Valley (of the Connecticut River) area of (White River Junction/Norwich) Vermont and (Hanover/Lebanon) NH. Yes, a multi-municipality, multi-state cooperative venture. See AdvanceTransit.com
"Congressional Democrats are concerned Trump will order another (illegal) strike on Iran. But, hilariously, Trump has now made it impossible for him to ever strike Iran’s nuclear facilities again, because it would prove he’s lying about destroying them."
As if that would bother him a lick. He'll deny that he ever said it, and that someone else lied to him, and Iran whipped up a bunchy of dirty bombys, and then send them bombers out!
The flagrant inaccuracy of terms bantered about is so infuriating - a socialist and a communist aren't the same thing; plus he's a democratic socialist which isn't technically either of those things. Also - if one is religiously racist as a foundation any other argument is undercut and irrelevant. People are the worst.

Charlie Kirk - what a fucking prick. He needs a reminder, to this effect:

Finally able to upgrade.
I agree with you 💯 percent

We can have nice things if we fight for them.
I should probably add that the tax is in addition to Massachusetts pre-existing 5% income tax.

Omg your edited FDR quote had me cackling

Wouldn't this be more like Communism?

I don't think I was clear. I agree with you - it's socialism. but what trump did was communism.
Not really. I said it’s what most people think is communism. In this case, it’s fascism.
Free buses here in Olympia, WA. The city determined it saved money compared to collecting fares and everything that involved.
Island Transit in Washington is free as well. And Whidbey and Camano Islands have yet to disappear into the sea as a result.

And, funny thing, they did not turn into a giant rolling homeless encampment, as many claimed they thought they would.
Those who deny nice little things for those less funded turn out to be wrong. Film at Eleven...
THIRTY . PERCENT. TURNOUT. PEOPLE! CALM THE F DOWN.
