Watched the speech and thought: "Yay, Sleepy Joe finally woke up and started echoing what some (now self or unemployed) journalists and almost 50% of voters have been telling him for years. Too fucking late!"

Come Monday afternoon he can return to his normal life. Driving his corvette, turning on the wipers when he meant to use the turn signal, all the while describing everything he sees in the rear view mirror.

Sour? Me? Nah, https://youtu.be/0invUXXsRAQ

“poor and working class “ !! Would you care to rephrase that?

Context Mr. Larsen. Most ‘working class’ are not ‘poor’. That said, you are obviously neither.

Expand full comment

They're not mutually exclusive! Some working class are not poor. That said, I take your point. Thanks for flagging.

We need to invent that device that makes a person experience several years of virtual reality in minutes, inside their own mind, just so Democratic candidates can be put through it instead of the circus of debate.

Maybe that way they could campaign and govern on the obvious issues it takes them whole presisidential terms to realize they should.

Joe Biden should have applied that Law to improve how history remembers him.

Why Romanian and Korean? You couldn't find more obscure languages? The Dean's December by Saul Bellow takes place in Romania. It's a good novel. I read it a long time ago. Good place to start?

Expand full comment

Ha! I'm not trying to learn Romanian or Korean... I need to read documents written in those languages...!

Brilliant piece today Jonathan. It's another 'if only' for the idiots party and for the rest of the country to ignore. A president is supposed to work 4 years, not campaign 24/7. No one ever points out that this is all Trump did, does and has been doing all the time. Campaigning with blowhard lies. And he is the guy who said that he was an outsider, not a politician. Every word out of his mouth is a lie, stupid, deception, or all of the above. This is who he is. A grandstanding do nothing. Except to make the rich richer. It's as clear as day, yet the middle class and poor complained and voted with their wallets. And Trump stole their wallet. Again. Shame. Fool me twice fools.

45 seemed to watch tv all morning arriving at the West Wing about 11-11:30 am yet somewhere behind the scenes he was very busy overseeing the Destruction of government.

Aw, thanks, Mike. I think in some respects, a president IS supposed to campaign. I mean, maybe they all are? It is, after all, a bully pulpit ... and they are, after all, called leaders...

Biden’s 2024 campaign? Am I missing something?

Expand full comment

What you're missing is the Biden of the final 8 minutes of his farewell speech. I wish we'd gotten this Biden on the front end rather than the tail.

Expand full comment

Oh I got that. It’s the part (I suppose satirical) about it being the launch of his 2024 campaign that screwed the context and I found rather unuseful.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, Lee. I appreciate it!

Twas a bit puzzled meself. Thinking it is satirical comment reflecting “too little, and waaayyyy too late.”

Expand full comment

Yea, a little too convoluted for the twisted and complex moment we’re in. I don’t have the mental energy to spare for it. Clever is great but keep it straight forward IMO.
