I work on testing software embedded in medical devices and also witnessed my father’s miraculous improvement after deep brain stimulation surgery to control his parkinson’s symptoms.
My fear is that the real goal of firing part of the FDA approval team is not to *delay* approvals but to push the agency to do *less oversight* and approve less safe devices. I checked into Neuralink a little after reading this. There are some red flags there.
I think the MAGAs are more opposed to trans women because they are terrified that they might be attracted to one and not know it until a…revealing moment? And/or, they have been attracted to a trans woman, and did experience a revealing moment and it shattered their fragile, empty little soul.
So here's the thing: Neurolink must be a GREAT BIG CONSUMER of animals for lab research. (How else can they go around implanting chips in monkeys' brains and stuff?) And where do those poor monkeys come from? Many of them are Macaques, whose very species is at risk because of predation - illegal, but thriving - by shady companies that kidnap them in southeast Asia and sell them to labs for experimentation. They usually live under horrible conditions and endure a nightmare enslaved, incarcerated existence until they are killed after their "experiments" have no more use for them. American labs are the major consumers: https://www.whitecoatwaste.org/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAn9a9BhBtEiwAbKg6fgSfsSAhk4UrjEO8XNMGXcnVjQkJXyrA44Z_XWg8Xv5d9qRcN-oxfRoCq-wQAvD_BwE
Re: those Venezuelan criminals y'all have heard screamed about for the last year or so, of the first 190 sent home to date, exactly 17 were discovered to have some kind of judicial record, none of them violent. There were, however, a number of them sufficiently injured to require medical care, including one who needed a wheelchair. This per the Orinoco Tribune.
This seems to be a universal phenomenon. Lots of reasons are proposed for it, among them that insecure cis males can too easily imagine themselves that way, and get nervous at the possibility of losing the thing they think with.
I appreciate your concern for protecting legitimate medical research which may be beneficial. But I don't share that concern when it applies to protecting Musk form oversight. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine article linked above details serious concerns about Musk's Neuralink scam. There is no evidence whatsoever that Neuralink implants will ever provide any therapeutic benefit. Musk is a drug addled Nazi. Neuralink has more in common with experiments Dr Mengele performed in Nazi concentration camps than with anything meeting the standards for NIH funding. In fact, Musk refuses to apply for NIH funding, because that would bring "would bring unwanted public oversight and bureaucratic hurdles".
Thanks, Doc! There's no one I'm more skeptical of, for sure. But if there's a 0.1% chance of people who work for him creating something useful, I'd rather have FDA staff in place to approve it (or reject it!) I am definitely NOT defending Musk or Neuralink ... just sufficient staffing to evaluate everything that he and LEGITIMATE medical-device makers want to sell...
Thank you, Doctor, for posting this! I was going to do the same, but couldn’t have put it as well as you did (mine would have mostly been a string of f words). I hope everyone reads this, and the link!
Hooray!! Your success with Substack absolutely positively made my day! For the first time at jury duty in Chicago yesterday I was sharing my passion for your work with a teacher from the suburbs and she already reads you!! Congratulations!
Wait...you told someone in the wild about TFN ... and she was ALREADY a Newsfucker? I believe this is the first verified in-situ sighting of a flock of Newsfuckers! (A murder of Newsfuckers? A PRIDE of Newsfuckers!) Thanks, Carolyn, and thanks for doing jury duty! (And for sharing your passion for TFN!)
“A group of starlings can be called a chattering, a congregation, a cloud, a constellation, a murmuration, a clutter, a filth, a scourge, and a vulgarity.” And just like starlings, Newsfuckers are beautiful annoyances!
Hey, now that you're rising in the ranks, why not monetize this?!
Do like Trump and make your own TFN memecoin, collect a hundred million dollars on day one in brokerage fees, and then all your contributors can eat shit and take the loss!
I’ve thought this for a long time. I also think (apropos of not much) that his mom put him in dresses and make-up when he was a child. There’s so little written/known about his mother but from what I have read, she was an odd one.
I look forward to TFN musing on the upcoming gestural buyer strikes. I worry that these are still more instances of poses (like Musk conspiracy theorems) that boomerang, making the alternative look as silly as the shite it opposes. I would even go so far as to opine that strikes only matter when they might be indefinite.
Fascinating point about the duration. As I've written before, it's when the duration is indefinite that you really get people to stress... still, even if these efforts don't change the world, it strikes me that any grassroots organizing now is good if not for right now then for movement-building in the future. Near future, I hope.
That's also a fascinating and important question: Is any organizing always better than none? I fear this is the danger of progressive politics. Sometimes, and perhaps often, self-owning happens. Worthwhile organizing has two aims: grow the team and create hope/put something worthwhile on the agenda. It's tricky. And it seems like self-soothing often makes us forget that growing the team is one of our aims. How many non-buyers on a day or a week will simply buy more right after? Should I also mention that lots of people already buy nothing from Amazon on lots of day -- because they broke.
Yep to these things. Even watching progressive videos -- or reading TFN! -- can mistakenly FEEL like doing something. And I'm definitely a skeptic of the claim that doing something is better than nothing. Uh, not always! In this case, though, even if individual actions may not move any needles, it feels important for people to know they're not alone and to make the connections organizing facilitates. I think!
Our "new media" ecology also militates against true organizing, I fear. It makes it even harder than it always was to truly debate what to do and not do. If you go back and watch Eyes on the Prize, the CRM folks did a shit-ton of exactly that. Now, it's just anybody with a clickable enough suggestion.
Another way of saying this: Won't Fox News have a field day with this "strike"? Will that price prove worth it? I don't claim to know for sure, but suspect we ought to save strikes for when they can't be pooh-poohed so easily and (perhaps) accurately.
I’m afraid that Fox News (and others) will do the same if there are millions of protesters in the street and thousands on their phones to Congress. They’ve done this to the antiwar movement for decades. The Revolution will not be televised; we have to think outside the media-controlled box.
I'm not arguing that Fox News being Fox News is a reason to never protest. I'm saying that, in some cases, they will prevail on the point. And, fwiw, I very much disagree that we have to think outside the media box. That's the only box in town, alas. We have to factor it into everything we do, IMO.

So many butt jokes!! I feel 13 again 🫶🏼
Excellent newsf’ing as always, Jonathan, thanks.
Thank you.
I somehow laugh EVERY TIME I reas this Substack. It brings me joy. Thank you so much!!
Thank you, Sarah! So great to hear!

Is this an examination of the news or a proctology exam?? 😅 But seriously it’s the correct treatment 🤓
Why are the MAGAts only concerned with trans women? They don't seem to mind trans men.🤔
This seems to be a universal phenomenon. Lots of reasons are proposed for it, among them that insecure cis males can too easily imagine themselves that way, and get nervous at the possibility of losing the thing they think with.
Your first story is hilarious beyond words while being simultaneously nauseating. Nightmare-material visuals. Just what we all need! Kudos!!

I like a “Thunder of Newsfuckers”
A thunder is a group of dragons :-D
You can also say a flight of dragons, but thunder is just too perfect! (there’s another word, too, but I can’t remember that one)
There's already a news oriented thunder of dragons group: viewers of The Damage Report on YouTube.
I even have the Tshirt.
“A group of starlings can be called a chattering, a congregation, a cloud, a constellation, a murmuration, a clutter, a filth, a scourge, and a vulgarity.” And just like starlings, Newsfuckers are beautiful annoyances!
I would propose "A frolickery of newsfuckers" to differentiate from all the other flockers.
Yes! 🐦🔥🐦🔥🐦🔥🐦🔥🐦🔥🐦🔥🐦🔥!!!
I vote for murmuration
Indeed. Murmurations are gorgeous.
Thank you for your service on jury duty! So important!

Has it not occurred to anyone yet that “he who shall not be named” is probably closet gay themself?

The long red tie is a giveaway.
And the dancing to YMCA, as bad as it is.
