Democrats absolutely love a good primary that relies on democracy to make the eventual nominee a stronger candidate! Just ask Bernie Sanders. I don’t think HRC supporters (or HRC herself) have stopped thanking him!

*Sigh* My world is my house, the factory, the town I live in. The people I actually know and love, the 62 years I've lived. The rest is the media I consume, my education, and conjecture.

I've concluded that Trump was a bad president, and Biden was good. I'll vote Democrat, but so will the rest of Illinois, overwhelmingly. I feel impotent.

I don't need to be convinced, I'm in your choir. But how in the world do we get all the people who think differently to change their minds?

You write well, Jonathan, but there are all these people who are being fed something else, something that agrees with them, who will never be persuaded. How do we get them to change their minds?

There "maybe" a disaster come November. At this point, I'm just looking for what I can try to hang on to.

Biden could keep running, win, then step aside. Fuck'em. All.

*edit* could, not should

There's lots of cognitively impaired presidents that made it through the eight years without destroying the country. However they weren't dealing with Trump. Think about Reagan in his last term!

Let me know when the felon drops out because of his lack of any qualifications to be president. Then we can talk about Biden.

The poll showing Harris leading among Democrats if Biden bows out might be the one that matters. He should definitely bow out. The serenity prayer is appropriate but limited and there's not enough time to wait. It's not the NYT that matters. It's the benefit of the doubt that died or lives on in Zombieland in pundits across the spectrum.

I think the NYT is already prepared to do a Hillary Clinton to Kamala Harris. And it will matter. Misogyny and racism are alive and well and always ready to be pandered to. I think it is entirely too risky to change boats now. I would support Harris, but I don't want to risk it this time. If Biden is re-elected there's a good possibility she will become president, and if she doesn't, she will be in a great position to run in 2028. No one should be taking that monster Trump seriously as a candidate, but they are.

The NYT endorsed Klobuchar and Warren, lol.

have you seen the supreme court ruling in re trump's immunity?...we have bigger fish to fry, and unless joe is resigning tomorrow in order for VP harris to order the DOJ to arrest trump and jail him without bail for treason and sedition as he SHOULD have done as his (biden's) first official act as president (the lawless six just gave the green light for such an act), it wont make a bit of difference either way, now or in november

I mostly agree with everything you said, but I think saying that voters picked Biden in the primary is being a little untruthful. Voters in the primary didn't have a choice, once Biden said he is running for re-election. The party elites shut down any other possible good candidates after that and even prevented a primary in some states. I'm very angry at the DNC for not having a robust primary and encouraging more big names to join in to see just where the democratic voters are.

Although I wish we would've had more choice for our candidate, I believe it's too late to tell Joe to bow out as long as he wants to stay in. And since no one else polls any better, then it makes no sense to upset the apple cart. The Dem convention will already be chaotic with Gaza war protesters (as is their right); we don't need it to be a complete shitshow.

upvoted for last paragraph...presidents never only run for one term, to do so would be handcuffing the whole idea of becoming president....also, it might be helpful to remember that sleepy old uncle president joe brandon has been the best president of the 21st century up to and including right now, and it's not even close

Thanks, Karen! And I hear you, for sure. That said, though, if voters en masse were truly opposed at the time they could, in theory, have filled the streets, boycotted the primaries, etc., etc. Did the DNC have their thumb on the scale? Sure, but voters could've mobilized against that, too. Is it realistic to think they would? Not even a little bit, I confess. But that kinda proves my point -- they simply weren't motivated to do so. Apathy and lack of engagement are almost always good explanations for voters not doing X, I fear... It's always a question of how quickly folks recognize bottom. Some folks saw it in 2020. Some folks saw it Thursday night.

presidents never run for only one term...and LBJ is the only one who bowed out when he could have run again...he'd have probably defeated nixon and spared us from that criminal asshole... there's also that thing that biden has gotten more accomplished in one term and been the best president of lifetime (that's 13 presidents)...so, all this handwringin and whining and gnarling and gnashing is extremely overblown, and this whole thing will be a non-event by the time the hacks on the supreme court release their ruling on emperor trump being immune from everything (including all future deadly plagues) sometime this afternoon...and yeah, the FNYT can STFU right now and forever...we would never have had this sociopathic criminal POS trump to begin with if not for their fash-curious fuckery
