I mean really, do people actually compulsively read every word that arrives bidden or otherwise into their inboxes? You have a choice! Read or don't read!

Perhaps, Jon, if you brand each missive with a BIG sticker indicating Newsletter or Original Reporting, people wouldn't feel duped into reading stuff that bores them. Or how about do some extra work and provide a tidy TLDR at the top of each post so we don't have to read anything else! But then we'd miss the links to the expensive words! Oh no! What to do??

(Because of the atonal medium here, I feel compelled to ask you to please ignore the sarcastic suggestions above...except I do actually like the links idea.)

I think my biggest concern is that some people who want the occasional original reporting don't want five TFN's a week in their inbox in addition. And as at least one reader has said, some TFN fans don't want my reporting hobby-horses showing up, either! So I think I'm leaning toward taking the reporting off the TFN silo...

As a purely personal choice, I would go with the newsletter. Your “original reporting” sort of seems to me maybe not as important as you think it is. I got sick to death of the Family/Prayer Breakfast drum because you beat it well past anything that particularly interested me. I mean, haven’t we known about The Family and the Prayer Breakfast sh!t for decades? You stopped about one or two posts of my wife and I getting so bored we unsubscribed. But for now we are hanging in.

Thanks, Stephan. Sorry for an undue boredom I've caused you and your wife! Thoughts and, uh, non-breakfast prayers!

In our family, we've always called Flah-ri-dah "The Elephant Graveyard." Because it's where auld ones go to d i e. As a geographer (who used to live there), I can unequivocally state it is just one big fat eggshell, cracking and falling into the Floridan Aquifer one sinkhole at a time. In fifty years, even if there were no hurricanes, Florida is going to be the new Bikini Atoll. If Guvner Ron has his way with climate science & all, it might only take twenty.

Well, this is terrifying. And I've read Carl Hiaasen!

I like the idea of linking the "big" words! I am also a grammar nerd, so, yeah, vocabulary:)

Doesn't have to be a choice between newsletter and original reporting. Should be all or nothing. Love the definitions link idea because Jon is so GD smart he makes me look up words. WTF is the purpose of share a note?

Thanks, John! The purpose of share a note is to get it in front of other people using substack, who might not see it otherwise. I realize SOME people want both original reporting -- when I can make it happen! -- and the weekday newsletter, but my concern is that some folks who WOULD sign up for the original reporting don't want the newsletter clogging their inbox every morning. So I'll put you in the "both" column and see what other folks have to say. Thanks!

Okay, Bro. So they are paying for your original reporting, right? So giving them a choice is the typical Jon Larsen nice thing to do.

My hope is that as many people as possible see my reporting, so I'm reluctant to put it behind a paywall. Still thinking about it! Thank you!
