I would love to see someone trying to avoid an Aluminum tariff, by bringing it from Europe as Aluminium.

I wonder if Trump et al will use the excuse “we were blocked at every attempt to make change so it’s not our fault we didn’t get anything done during our first 2 years. So vote us a majority in the House for 2 more years and we’ll keep fighting for you … bla bla bla.”

I sure hope so.

Thanks Jonathan for holding aloft your anti-MAGA kryptonite against these assholes. But I suspect that the MAGAverse is going to disregard court rulings in which case we will need more TFN reporting.

Last time DumDum imposed tariffs on Canadian Steel & Aluminum it was found to have increased costs of goods; Supply of US steel available is tightened + less competition = higher cost. The lower $CDN is what draws the market to it. Last time around ALCOA asked and got a reprieve from the Aluminum tariffs because they get 60% of it from Canada. They are repeating exactly the same mistake as their last term. It's all smoke & mirrors.

Canada got rid of pennies in 2014 as well as the $1 & 2$ bill as it makes economical sense. The price of the item is rounded up or down from the return change. As well, the nicknamed loonie ($1) & twonnie ($2) are very practical and it's circulation life is vastly increased. Many countries have improved their currency for this effect. I dare say it but removing the pennies may be considered a progressive concept.

I don't actually have a problem with eliminating pennies. If only because I haven't done the research, but I certainly don't assume prima facie that it's a bad idea! Thanks, CINFS!

So...curious what you think of this article from The Nation, to wit; "In theory, these orders should be effective stopgaps. The problem is that the court has no enforcement mechanism. It has no army, no police force, no power to impose its will. Instead, the executive—in this case the president—is supposed to enforce the court’s orders. But what if Trump doesn’t?" https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/courts-cant-stop-the-trump-musk-coup/

Aren’t all of the police and law enforcement entities in the US supposed to enforce the laws, including court orders?

Expand full comment

Yes, but the federal "law enforcement entities" are under the control of the executive branch...

Judges may judge, but unfortunately they have only Federal Marshals as their enforcement. The Federal Marshals are-guess what- part of the DOJ.

So, if Trump says “make me” there’s little that can be done except to hit the streets.

The only problem with your position is this: who is going to enforce these judicial decisions?

Good positivity today on the backlash that takes time to develop, in contrast to spouting out words the media immediately headline. But you story over the weekend about what the 'news' should be doing and reporting on was Pulitzer worthy. First, for telling it like it is, and secondly for calling out how poorly the 4th Estate Inc. is doing these days. Intentionally or not, they are complicit in screwing us over as well. Sadly, I am not allowed to vote for Pulitzers, but I give you my thumbs up, carry on and imaginary million votes anyhow.
