One hasn't truly sold out to corporate Comms until one does so to a non-profit org. For a non-profit they sure turned out to be greedy (in my case). That was 30 years ago so I am sure times have changed for the better, yes?

First casualty of hyper-capitalism is idealism. Thanks for being a dick, it helps me keep my bearings once in a while.

I love TFN. Thank you for not paywalling. Earlier this year, not only did my day job quit me—AI ate the entire profession (translation). I’m scrambling to survive off… my creative work now! It might be a while, but once I’m ashore again, I’ll be supporting you.

Given how often I've used Google translate in my work, the least I can do for someone whose job I helped kill is share the work I produce as a result. Sigh. Here's to the day when we ALL get to share in the benefits of AI, automation, etc... I'm glad you're surviving and am rooting for you -- and us all -- to be safely ashore.

I’m a paid subscriber and I intend to stay one. I read you and Heather Cox Richardson - everything you publish. Thanks.

Just wanted to let you know that I pulled my pay from Chris Hedges because he jumped the shark. I also pulled my pay from Michael Moore because he was whining too much.

I looked at some of the stats of the bigger sub stack people and if 5% of their subscribers are paid they're doing really well and at that, as the Fucker says they're just writing on titillating and fairly benign subject matter or stuff we already know.

I like the Fucking news and I hope others do as well and for me it's worth a coffee a week.

I'm sure this bozo will jump the shark someday and probably start whining, but until then I'm going to enjoy this and as I already have, learn a thing or two,Thank you.

I can't tell you how much your last-minute injection of abrupt skepticism tickled my dark, bozo heart, David. Thanks for the kind words, especially given your expectation of my eventual slide. And, of course, thank you for your support, no matter how temporary you anticipate it being!

I don't think you would ever Jump the shark or whine, I think you (from your inflections) would rather dump this and go get a real job than to bastardize your integrity.

I would also like to credit you for giving actual statutes as in todays piece (1/8/25) that people could actually look up, kind of reminds me of the book, Bury my heart at Wounded Knee.

Keep up the great work and thanks.

It is your willingness to call out the shortcomings and deficiencies of all parties and participants in this never ending arm-wrestle for the soul of the United States of Hypocrisy that won my earnest support.

May you always dance softly and carry a big fish. https://youtu.be/T8XeDvKqI4E?

"Likewise, a lot of oxygen gets upsucked by “news” that’s really just tea-leaf reading, bits of information that feel like they tell us what’s gonna happen or who someone “really” is. I think of this as predictive or essentialist news and it’s almost always bullshit."

THIS! Keep up the good work and the the corresponding chuckles. :)

I've always thought highly of Keith Olberman and now I suspect you were one of the prime reasons. May I suggest that you forge a partnership with the Nation magazine? They've got deeper pockets and may help tfn get us through the next 4 years.

Thanks, Joel. I'd definitely love to leach -- I mean LATCH! -- onto some bigger, sympatico outlets. I'm racing to get some reporting done this month but then hope to branch out to more systemic efforts such as you suggest. Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks for telling us your story Jonathan. I have appreciated your reporting over the last year and I just subscribed.

Like many here, I was relieved to find Substack after the self-destruction of the other place. My main concern with Substack though, is that most of us cannot afford to pay $60-90/year to each of the content providers we want to follow. I have chosen to subscribe to a few providers who write non-sanewashed news with citations, but that also post (mostly at least) publicly, as people need competent reporting more than ever. But each reader must decide for themselves who to invest in. We will see if the arrangement is sustainable for the authors.

BTW, I was an early adopter of Countdown and Up--not surprised reading you now that you were involved! (Sadly I have long since given up cable news.)

Thank you, Katy! I, too, revolt at the notion of siloing news for people who can afford it. Like, ew, gross. So while I have paywalled a few stories -- (but still emailing them to ALL subscribers) -- I'm super-encouraged that more people seem motivated by supporting the work than by reading specific articles. Meaning NOT paywalling might be both the morally better but also capitalistically superior model. Probably a good lesson about socialism in there somewhere...

As time went on, I grew less and less enamored of TYT as they steadily, if slowly, drifted Right.

Where do you stand on this?

And by “drifting rightward” I don’t mean “criticizing the Democratic Party and its leadership.”

Thank you for telling us about yourself. I always liked the Young Turks. I love your irreverence. So many rules and standards of behavior just meant to squash us. Looking forward to more of your excellent and, I think amusing and witty pieces.

Free subscriber here with not a lot of disposable income to throw around (esp during this time of year) but with that in mind, you’re moving up in my 2025 newsqueue. Hopefully to paid soon.

Thank you, Mike! No one should subscribe who can’t afford it. We don’t want to worsen the situation we’re fighting to change, and I appreciate the support of every Newsfucker.
